The student and music teacher may select music of a degree of difficulty suitable for the student and the level in which the student competes. Since preparation involves hours of practice, we want the student to select a piece which he or she loves. Thus, the list of acceptable pieces is far from restrictive - in fact, it is far too broad to list in its entirety here. This list of pre–approved selections can be found in a notebook located at the Milton Public Library’s Kidder Branch (Blue Hills Parkway). Go to the Reference Room and ask the Reference Librarian for the Milton Young Musician’s Festival Repertoire Notebook. You aren't necessarily limited to selections from this list; however, any repertoire selection NOT contained in this notebook MUST be approved by the MYMF Committee. Please contact Mrs. Moulton by phone (617-698-3200) or by E-mail. The basis of the MYMF repertoire lists comes from the highly respected New York State School Music Association. All MYMF categories contain NYSSMA repertoire lists from 1997 and 2000, and some also have a 1988 list (though you may find that some of the compositions from this older list are no longer available in print). The Piano category also includes a listing from the Royal Conservatory of Music. After selecting a repertoire, it is the student’s responsibility to purchase the music themselves. The student will need to bring a copy of the repertoire piece (or pieces) to the audition for the adjudicators. The last bit is important enough to repeat. The student must have an original copy of the music and (if he or she is not playing from memory) a photo-copy for the adjudicators. The MYMF takes the music industry's copyright protection laws very seriously. We must ensure that the student is playing from a score obtained legitimately. Whether the student chooses to play from the original or from an annotated photo-copy, there must be an original copy in the room during the performance.
